Kirin's Kickass Column: Antisocial Music

by Kirin Furst '10

Monday March 24, 2008

The innovations of post-modern music are completely astonishing. Not only has digital technology released us from all sorts of practical obstacles in music creation; the rules of composition and performance have been turned in upon themselves, defiled, raped and thrown back together in what appears to be a limitless playing field for experimentation. The proof has found a portal to Sarah Lawrence through the unique, abrasive style of Anti-Social Music. An NYC collective of musicians including our own guest faculty member Pat Muchmore, the group features an assortment of orchestral instruments and electronics wielded in a strange combination of classical influence, post-punk, jazz and more.

Ten Dollar Ticket: Be Kind, Rewind

by James T. Tynion

Monday March 24, 2008

Once they get past the set-up, the movie is allowed to get down to the concept that made me want to see the movie in the first place. The fake movies are hilarious, and watching them get made is definitely the highlight of the film.

On the visual experience: White Marble, Black Paper

by Sarah Hassan '09

Monday March 24, 2008

If Michelangelo’s motive was to catch humanity at it’s best when it wasn’t looking, David being the blissfully unaware portrait of masculine perfection, than Kara Walker has ensnared humanity at its most brutal and hypocritical-a tiger by the tail if you will-with some of those lurking tigers being a confederate soldier who suckles the breast of a young slave girl before he goes off into battle and a plantation master cutting off the leg of his black bastard son.

On the Scene: Marie Howe Shines

by Alex Dimitrov

Tuesday February 19, 2008

Her aura is intriguing and welcoming – the trademark big hair and a voice that sounds so distinctly familiar, that the woman next to me turned to her friend and said, “I feel like I hear her telling my story, and she’s telling it better than even I know it.”

Ten Dollar Ticket: Rest in Peace, Heath

by James T. Tynon '10

Tuesday February 19, 2008

I sincerely doubt there’s a person left on campus who has yet to hear about the tragic death of 28-year-old film star Heath Ledger on the twenty-second of January.

Kirin’s Kickass Column: Skins Eat Airplane

by Kirin Furst '10

Tuesday January 22, 2008

With often raw, abrupt guitar riffs interlacing bouncing synth melodies and rhythms, Sky Eats Airplane embodies all of the chaotic dissonance of hardcore accompanied by a pop drum-and-bass twist.

Ten-Dollar Ticket: No Country for Old Men

by James T. Tynon '10

Tuesday January 22, 2008

Film Critic James T. Tynion crowns No Country for Old Men “by far the best picture I’ve seen this year.”
